Fourth Sunday of Easter - 2017

Consolation in suffering for the sake of Christ:
Some of the readings thus far in this Eastertide had been about painful suffering experiences of the Apostles after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. On this Fourth Sunday of Easter, in the second reading, Peter decides to address this suffering for the sake of our faith. Thus, Saint Peter consoles us, “Beloved: If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” There is no other time, my brothers and sisters, that these words of encouragement are more important than in our time. Look around the world and see how Christians are been slaughtered because of our faith. Have you heard the cries of the Christians been persecuted in different countries of our world and silence is the only response they received from their governments and governments of the world? In short, Christians have become an endangered species now in our world, methodically and systematically. Let’s come home: how about ourselves Christians? Do we suffer in the hands of our fellow Christians? Could you advice your friends, neighbors, fellow Christians, siblings, children, parents, grandparents or grandchildren on the issues of morals and faith without been accused of being judgmental. How many preachers could preach the truth of the Gospel today convincingly without being concerned about losing parishioners and Sunday collections? How many would accommodate the abnormal status-quo to reign in our society, so not to rock the boat, while the word of God is trampled upon under the pretenses of being pastoral? If you could not rise above these afore mentioned instances folks; it is certain that you are terrified by fear and suffering. But if you could, then be assured that you are one of those that Saint Peter encouraged to remain faithful and steadfast to the truth you received, because this is the reason why Christ died and resurrected for you. Blessed are you when you do not constitute obstacles
to the word of God; and even more, blessed are you when you are persecuted for your faith. Amen! In Christ, Father Uche Obikwelu
