EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD

OUR LORD HAS RISEN INDEED AS HE SAID!
ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA!
Resurrection is not a word that is common to the
world, therefore, it is always met with some complex
feelings. But, for we Christians, resurrection happened
only once in this world. The word became meaningful
in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is what
Easter is!
The readings on this Easter day provide us with fundamental
reasons why we are to believe in what we
celebrate. In the First reading from the Acts of the
Apostles, Peter, convincingly addressed his audience
thus, “We are witnesses of all that he did both in the
country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to
death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised
on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to
all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God
in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose
from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the
people and testify that he is the one appointed by God
as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the
prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in
him will receive forgiveness of sins through his
name.” During his ministry and, up and until the
passion, death and resurrection of our Lord, Peter, the
Apostles and Christ’s disciples have been witnesses to
all that Christ said and miracles he performed. So,
when Peter gave account of Jesus mission, he indeed
opened the window for his audience, as well as we, to
believe.
Though the soldiers were bribed by the treacherous
and hypocritical Pharisees to lie that the Apostles of
Jesus came in the dark of the night and stole his body,
they still with such military powers could stop God
from being God. Before his burial, the Pharisees had
obtained permission from Pontus Pilate to provide
heavy guards over the tomb of Jesus. It is clear,
therefore, that if the Apostles could not stop them from
arresting Jesus? How then could they overpower these
soldiers and stole Christ’s body? The lie does not add
up! In credence to the story of Jesus’ resurrection, the
Gospel of John tells us, “So, Peter and the other
disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran,
but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived
at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial
cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter
arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the
burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his
head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a
separate place. Then the other disciple also went
in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he
saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the
Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” The empty
tomb is one of the empirical evidences of the
resurrection. Because, it was never heard or seen in the
history of humankind that somebody could die and rise
from the dead. Never had it happen before and never
will it occur again. Being God, death could not hold
Jesus down.
We are the Easter people, because we are followers of
Christ. We celebrate Easter because we are joyful that
our savior has vanquished the evil one and triumphantly
arose from the underworld. To conclude, here
are a few excerpts from the “Easter Vigil Exsultet”,
“Our birth would have been no gain, had we not been
redeemed. O wonder of your humble care for us! O
love, O charity beyond all telling, to ransom a slave
you gave away your Son! O truly necessary sin of
Adam, destroyed completely by the Death of Christ! O
happy fault that earned so great, so glorious a
Redeemer!”
Happy Easter!
In Christ,
Father Uche Obikwelu
