As the community of Sunrise Beach Village grew, so did the need for a Catholic church, as the nearest one was in Llano, Texas – 25 miles away. The bridge across the Llano River in Kingsland had not yet been built.
A group of Catholics met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Funke to begin gathering information necessary for the formation of a parish. Herb Stehling chaired the meeting, Joseph Funke was appointed treasurer and recording secretary was Mrs. Shirley Moczygemba. This first meeting on November 30, 1963 showed by survey that there were 42 Catholic families in the area.
A committee consisting of Herb Stehling, Frank Kalinowski, William Funke, and F. E. Moczygemba approached the Bishop at Austin, Most Rev. Louis J. Reicher.
Father Luyton, priest for Llano and Mason was contacted to also serve the Sunrise Beach community, early in 1964. He consented, the Bishop gave approval January 21, 1964, and the committee proceeded with plans for the church. In October of 1964 a meeting with the committee, Fr. Luyton, and the builder, Mr. Leo Blanchard, resulted in the beginning of the church.
Groundbreaking was October 11, 1964 at 4:00 pm. The first mass was offered March 6, 1965 at 7:00 pm. Dedication was April 30, 1965 with Bishop Reicher officiating. The first baptism was Tina Marie Funke, on October 2, 1965.
